The measure of an athlete on the world stage is not simply how popular or highly regarded they are in their own sport, but how well known they are to people outside of the sport. When an athlete breaks the bounds of their own notoriety and becomes a household name to people who can't name anything else in their sport of choice they are truly a superstar. In the United States, where soccer is not a widely known sport and most Americans haven't been able to name a player since Pele, David Beckham's name resounds. What is it about David Beckham that makes his name synonymous with the game?

On the field

David Beckham started his professional career in the 1994 -- 95 season for Manchester United. By 1996 Beckham was the name repeated frequently by media and fans alike. As his outstanding plays pushed Manchester United farther than they ever dreamed they would go, his signature free kick and seeming ability to bend the ball around defenders or kick it over the heads of goalies became a stunning example of the grace behind the game. Beckham also became known for his outstanding discipline and willingness train and craft his soccer ability, as well as helping others on his team to develop training regimens and create the best of professional play. Many teammates credit his professional attitude and inspirational play for their ability to recover in hard fought games and persevere to championship.

Off the field

Any player who achieves athletic recognition in a sport as popular internationally as soccer also achieves name recognition. For David Beckham this recognition was the start of a series of international endorsements for products, companies and fashion lines. At one point, he was a spokesperson for a fashion line, hairstylist, exercise routine, a spa and Disneyland. His status as a fashion plate, has brought him attention for his neat appearance and an unwanted moniker when he was listed in 2002 by salon.com as a stunning example of a metrosexual. His reputation as someone as interested in his appearance as he is his on-field statistics followed him throughout his career and lead to even more fame and fortune. While he adamantly responded to the charges of metro sexuality by proclaiming his love for wife Victoria Beckham, he also admits to being a victim of obsessive-compulsive disorder and having a need for his appearance to please him. This humble pronouncement only served to raise Beckham's image in the eyes of his peers.

In the news

Of course, not all of David Beckham's press is good for him. His marriage to Victoria Adams, also known as Posh Spice, gained him more media attention than playing for his team. Many English fans began to see him as a star and not an athlete. His recent move to Los Angeles, California as part of the Los Angeles Galaxy team, and his subsequent purchase of a house in Hollywood Hills has led many to speculate he has lost focus for the game that he loves.

Only time will tell if the lasting legacy of David Beckham will be his free kick, his wife, or his image. What we know now is that his discipline and skill on the soccer field have translated into unforgettable games and a wonderful life.

The current champion of La Liga, Real Madrid, has closed the gap down to just four points from the leader Barcelona by beating the third place’s Sevilla with a score of 4-2, this past Sunday. The captain Raul had an amazing night, scoring 3 goals and increasing his team hopes of defending its championship. This triumph is the 17th of the last 19 games for the “Whites”, who have been having an amazing run due to the accurate direction of their coach Juande Ramos and the great attitude of the Merengues players, who are focused on winning the title for a third consecutive year.

During the first minutes of the game, Sevilla was on control of the game and even managed to open the score with a goal of the Brazilian Renato Dirnei. However, that early goal made the Merengues to get a fighting attitude and take control of the game since the middle of the first half, creating chances and achieving a draw in the score with a goal of Raul, who took advantage of a cross of his teammate Cristoph Metzelder at minute 45. In the second half the “Whites” kept leading the game and showing great football which in result gave Real Madrid two more goals from their superstar striker Raul Gonzalez at the 63rd and 65th minutes, putting the score 3-1.

Nevertheless, a quick reaction from the team Sevilla and a good play of Diego Capel, who scored the second goal for the “Rojiblancos” at minute 81, gave hope to the team and grow fans’ emotions. However, that hope was crushed at overtime when the Brazilian Marcelo scored the fourth goal of the “Merengues”.

After the game, Coach Juande Ramos expressed his satisfaction over the great performance of his team, who has won seven consecutive games after the draw against Atlético Madrid on March 8th. Juande Ramos stated that his team’s effort has paid off; the team has won many games without reducing the gap, but even so they have kept fighting.

“We've won a lot of matches, picking up 17 victories overall, but we've not been able to close on them and at times it makes it hard for you when you don't see any results for the work you are putting in. There are five games remaining, a lot of points, and on Saturday we have a home game against Barcelona where we are going to play a very important game," affirmed Ramos.

On the other hand, the striker of the “Whites”, Raul, stated that his team knew that Sevilla would make things difficult for them and even when they were down early in the game, they had faith in themselves and worked hard to control the game by creating good chances to get the victory.

With this triumph, now Real Madrid is preparing for the “Clásico” against Barcelona in the Santiago Bernabeu on May 2nd. We wish the best to Real and Barcelona and we hope to watch great football next weekend.

Opened on April 20, 1912, their home stadium, Fenway Park, is the oldest major league ballpark still in operation.. The Red Sox has the honor of winning the first World Series as the Boston Americans in 1903 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. After an 86-year interval, they were able to record their most recent World Series championship win in 2004.

The Red Sox's chief rival is the New York Yankees. The two clubs "enjoy" one of the longest-standing rivalries in North American sports.

The minor Western League declared its equality with the National League under Ban Johnson in 1900. It was the only major league then. The name of the league was changed to the American League by Johnson. Initially the team was competing in the streets. However, the upstart placed franchises in two of the largest and most important National League cities, Philadelphia and Boston.

The Americans participated in the first modern World Series in 1903. They were successful in beating the favored Pittsburgh Pirates, winning five games to three. The Americans, aided by the modified chants of "Tessie" by the Royal Rooters fan club and by its stronger pitching staff, managed to overcome the odds, winning the first ever World Series.

The Red Sox logo used in 1908, when they were simply known as "Boston".The 1904 club was almost as good as the previous team.But the Americans found themselves in a tight pennant race through the last games of the season due to the surprise emergence of the New York Highlanders. In order to win the pennant, the Highlanders needed to win both games.

The Americans lost 100 games in the 1906 season. But the newly renamed Red Sox was able to improve immediately with the help of several new star players. By 1909, Red Sox worked their way to third place and the legendary center fielder Tris Speaker had become a fixture in the Boston outfield. However, the Red Sox would not win the pennant again until their 105-win 1912 season.

Joseph Lannin was the owner of the Red Sox from 1913 to 1916. He was successful in signing Babe Ruth who was soon the best-known and one of the best players ever. The Red Sox propelled to the World Series again with another 101 wins in 1915. They were able to beat the Philadelphia Phillies four games to one. The 1916 team repeated the pennant. The Red Sox won the World Series once again. They defeated the Brooklyn Robins this time. By 1918, the team found itself at the top of the heap again, led by Babe Ruth to a World Series championship over the Chicago Cubs.

When Boston could not win for a few decades and New York achieved great success, the sale of Babe Ruth came to be viewed as the beginning of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry. It is described as the "Greatest Rivalry on Earth". Frazee continued to sell many of his star players after the sale of Ruth to the Yankees.

The Red Sox didn't reach the postseason for the next seven years after the 1978 playoff game. During that period, they finished no higher than third place in their division.

In the 1986 World Series the Red Sox played the New York Mets. The Red Sox won the first two games in Shea Stadium, but lost the next two at Fenway, knotting the series at 2 games apiece. After Bruce Hurst recorded his second victory of the series in game 5; the Red Sox returned to Flushing Meadows looking to garner their first championship in 68 years. However, Game Six marked the most devastating losses in club history. Roger Clemens was curiously lifted from the game with a 3-2 lead after pitching seven strong innings.

The Red Sox were able to return to the postseason in 1988. With the club in fourth place early in the 1988 season, manager John McNamara was fired. He was replaced by Joe Morgan. Immediately the club won 12 games in a row, and 19 of 20 overall. They soured up to the AL East title in what would be referred to as Morgan's Magic.

In 1990, the Red Sox would again win the division and face the Athletics in the ALCS. However, the A's swept the Series in four.

In 2000, the Red Sox failed to take advantage of Nomar Garciaparra's career year and Pedro Martinez's historic season. Other standouts included reliever Derek Lowe and outfielders Carl Everett and Dante Bichette, but the rest of the team was weak, and the Red Sox stumbled to an 85-77 record.

GM Theo Epstein's first major step toward restocking the team for 2007 was to pursue one of the most anticipated acquisitions in recent history. The Red Sox had won the bid for the rights to negotiate a major league contract with Japanese superstar pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka. NBA - Magic Win the Series against the 76ers and Advance to the Second Round

The Orlando Magic, who finished at third place in the Eastern Conference for the regular season, defeated the Philadelphia 76ers in the sixth game of the first round, wrapping up the series 4-2 with a score of 114-89. Despite the fact that the Magic lacked their superstar Dwight Howard and their shooting guard Courtney Lee – the first due to suspension and the second for sinus surgery - the Orlando Magic pulled off the victory convincingly. Philadelphia just didn’t have the fighting mentality and desire to win; the 76ers lacked defensive effort and had a poor shooting percentage during the game.

From the beginning of the game, the Sixers were down in the score. They ended the first quarter losing by nine points, even after a great contribution by their point guard Rafer Alston, who scored 12 points in that first quarter and gave a solid lead. During the second quarter, things became worse for the Sixers, who lacked team work, especially in the defensive end. The Magic scored easy baskets, giving them a lead of 14 points, finishing 48-62 at halftime.

For the third quarter, the 8 points scored by Howard’s substitute, Marcin Gortat, gave Orlando more confidence and extended their lead by one more point. The Magic ended that quarter winning by 15 points. In the final quarter, things were out of control for the Sixers, who couldn’t find a way to come back. The desperation and the lack of control led to a rousing moment with 6:24 remaining, as both Dalembert and Magic forward Hedo Turkoglu appeared to be fighting with their elbows. After that play ended, Turkoglu confronted Dalembert, who then stepped out to fight, but teammates and referees quickly separated them and both received a technical foul. However, because it was his second technical foul, Turkoglu was ejected. After this incident, the Sixers couldn’t focus to cut the lead and the Magic were fired up, winning in the end 114-89.

At the end of the game, the Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said that this was one of the best wins of his coaching career. Even though his team lacked two of his starters, his players pulled through and got their ticket to the second round, where they will play the winner of the Boston Celtics-Chicago Bulls series.

“The last thing I said to the guys leaving the locker room is 'Be great today’. This is definitely one of the best wins I've ever been a part of," stated Van Gundy.

On the other hand, the Philadelphia coach Tony Dileo was very disappointed by his team’s performance. He expressed his incredulity at losing against a team that was missing two of its most important players, and lamented his team’s lack of a fighting mentality.

The best scorers for the Orlando Magic were Rashard Lewis with 29 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists; Rafer Alston with 21 points and 10 assists; J.J Redick with 15 points; Mickael Pietrus with 14 points; Hedo Turkoglu with 12 points and 5 assists; and finally Marcin Gortat with 11 points and 15 rebounds. For the Sixers the best scorers were Andre Miller with 24 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists; Andre Iguodala with 20 points and 6 assists; and lastly Louis Williams with 17 points.
